Lenna's LCH Fundraiser
slideshow
Hi, my name is Lenna Couch, and I have Langerhan’s Cell Histocytosis (LCH). LCH is an extremely rare type of cancer/autoimmune disease. Because it is so rare, I was initially misdiagnosed with an infection in my skull which led to an unnecessary craniotomy and weeks of IV antibiotics. Eventually my doctors figured out what was wrong with me and diagnosed me with multi-focal bone LCH. The LCH caused painful tumor-like lesions in many different bones in my body. The standard treatment for LCH is chemotherapy combined with steroids for 12 months. Unfortunately, after my first 12 months of treatment my LCH came back and in even more bones than before. I had to then go on an even stronger chemotherapy with bad side effects for six months. Those six months were really hard and for two weeks every month I was pretty much unable to do much of anything. I got sick a lot and my immune system was wiped out which kept me from going to school or really even leaving the house. In addition to that I spent many nights in the hospital. The good news is that the stronger chemo seems to have worked and I no longer have any signs of the disease. After 2 ½ years my life feels like it’s getting back to normal again.

As hard as my journey was I know some kids with LCH have been battling the disease even longer and with even more aggressive types than I had. My goal is to increase awareness for this relatively unknown disease and to raise money to fund research in the hopes that Dr. Ashish Kumar and his team at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital can find better ways to diagnose and treat this terrible disease.
